New Delhi [India], January 19 (ANI): BJP candidate Parvesh Verma has fired back at the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) over allegations of an attack on Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s convoy.
On Sunday Verma addressed a press conference, refuting allegations levelled by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) that he orchestrated an attack on party national convenor Arvind Kejriwal.
“The car in which Arvind Kejriwal was sitting hit three people when he was in the car. The three people have given a statement that the driver had applied brakes but Arvind Kejriwal signalled him to keep driving… After that, they were injured… We have also complained to the Election Commission….” he said.
According to Verma, three people from the New Delhi assembly constituency tried to speak to Kejriwal, but were hit by his car when he signalled the driver to keep moving, despite the brakes being applied. The three individuals allegedly gave a statement corroborating this account.
Verma also dismissed AAP’s claims that one of the individuals involved was a close acquaintance of his, saying that all 1.09 lakh voters in the New Delhi seat are his acquaintances.
“Yesterday, three people from the (New Delhi) assembly tried to speak to Arvind Kejriwal, they did not have any weapons with them. Out of the three, they posted one person’s picture and claimed he is a close acquaintance of mine. All the 1 lakh 9 thousand voters of (New Delhi seat) are my close acquaintance,” said the BJP candidate.
Verma claimed that Kejriwal’s frustration with the response to his door-to-door campaign led to the incident.
“… Arvind Kejriwal has been the CM for the last 11 years, still he has to go for door-to-door campaign. He is frustrated with the response he is getting… When the youth was asking for employment, he hit them with his car…,” he said.
Earlier, AAP shared a video on their official X handle, alleging that BJP “goons” hurled a stone at Kejriwal’s car.
The BJP candidate further alleged that Kejriwal’s actions demonstrate his frustration with being questioned by the youth about employment opportunities. The incident has taken a political turn, with Verma’s party filing a complaint with the Election Commission.
Verma also claimed that Kejriwal falsely accused three voters of being linked to the BJP after they tried to approach him, calling them ‘goons’.
“Arvind Kejriwal, who once claimed he wouldn’t take a car, bungalow, or security, now has a convoy of 50 cars. Yesterday, three voters from the assembly tried to approach him, but they were unarmed. Kejriwal posted a photo of one of them, claiming he’s linked to the BJP and me. He’s arrogant and has no shame, calling his own voters ‘goons,’ he said.
He further added, “I was holding a press conference in front of the media when this incident occurred. Kejriwal’s entourage is excessive, with 50 cars and 400 Punjab police personnel carrying guns, how can this happen amid security.”
Further, he targeted Kejriwal on AAP ’10 guarantees’, saying that in time of his governance, he hasn’t completed all the guarantees.
“The AAP government promised a ‘clean Delhi,’ but the mountains of trash remain untouched, and in fact, they’re growing. This isn’t the clean Delhi they promised. Their promise of a safer Delhi for women has also fallen short. Despite assurances of 15,000 buses in public transport, only 2,000 buses are operational, forcing women to rely on lifts, taxis, or walking alone at night,” he said.
“Furthermore, unauthorized colonies in Delhi lack basic facilities. Not a single colony has 100% access to sewer lines, water, and drainage. The ‘Jaha Jhuggi Waha Makaan’ scheme has also failed to deliver, with no houses provided to Delhi’s residents, despite the Prime Minister’s efforts to provide housing to those in need,” he added.
He further said, “Despite claims of development, 30% of Delhi’s areas still lack proper lighting. Moreover, the promise of piped drinking water to every household remains unfulfilled. If 20 litres of water are used in one part of a house, the rest of Delhi is left without clean drinking water. Furthermore, the Delhi government’s claim of having India’s best education facilities rings hollow. Ironically, not a single child of the Chief Minister, Ministers, MLAs, or Corporators attends these government schools. Instead, they all opt for private schools.”
Earlier on Saturday, AAP claimed that Kejriwal was attacked by the “people” of BJP candidate Parvesh Varma who was also campaigning at that time.
“Fearing defeat, BJP panicked and got its goons to attack Arvind Kejriwal While BJP candidate Pravesh Verma was campaigning, goons of BJP candidate Pravesh Verma attacked Arvind Kejriwal with bricks and stones and tried to hurt him so that he could not campaign. BJP people, Kejriwal ji is not going to be scared of your cowardly attack, the people of Delhi will give you a befitting reply,” AAP wrote on X.
Countering the AAP’s claims, BJP candidate from New Delhi seat-Parvesh Verma alleged that the former Chief Minister’s vehicle “ran over” party workers. He alleged that Kejriwal’s car ran over three youths, in what, he called an “attempt to murder”. (ANI)
