New Delhi [India], February 5 (ANI): Amid allegations of misconduct by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Virendraa Sachdeva hit back at AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal, saying that Kejriwal’s party “has not only looted Delhi but ruined the character of it.”
Earlier in the day, AAP alleged that the BJP has been distributing money and coercing voters in various assembly constituencies.
In a scathing attack, Delhi BJP President Sachdeva told ANI, “This is the character of Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party, which apart from looting Delhi, has also corrupted the character of Delhi. Despair and desperation are clearly visible on Saurabh Bhardwaj’s face. This was not the case in the last two elections. Your hooliganism is being caught, your liquor is being caught, your money is being held. If your fake votes are being caught, then this scuffle of yours is natural.”
The Delhi BJP president further urged the people of Delhi to bring in the “double engine” government for a better future.
“I appeal to the people of Delhi to vote in large numbers for a better Delhi and double engine government,” Sachdeva added.
Earlier, AAP raised concerns over voter coercion at the Sainik Vihar polling station in Shakur Basti, claiming that a police officer had forced a voter to support a particular party.
AAP’s post read, “Amit Shah’s Delhi Police is trying to hijack the elections. People themselves are telling how Delhi Police is forcibly making people vote in favour of BJP at Sainik Vihar polling station, Shakur Basti. The people of Delhi are watching everything and are responding to the conspiracies of BJP by voting in large numbers.”
The allegations were subsequently refuted by the District Election Office (DEO) of North Delhi.
In a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the DEO clarified, “This is with reference to a complaint received on February 5, 2025, at 12:33 PM, alleging that police personnel at Sainik Vihar forced a voter to exercise their vote in favour of a particular political party. Upon receiving the complaint, the Flying Squad (FST) was immediately dispatched to the location. The team reached the site and initiated an inquiry.”
Meanwhile, various officials also urged people to exercise their right to vote.
Chemicals and Petrochemicals Secretary, Nivedita Shukla Verma praised the arrangements made for the people for casting their vote.
“Voting is the strength of democracy… Everybody was very enthusiastic and coming in to vote as early as possible… Today’s arrangements are also very good and befitting the festival of democracy… We are proud to be Indians and voting is our… Everyone should vote because this is a chance to exercise our rights,” she told ANI.
Labour and Employment Secretary, Sumita Dawra told ANI, “I am a proud voter… It is a peaceful and systematic environment… All people should exercise their rights today and vote in large numbers, this is our duty.”
Voter turnout of 57.7 per cent was registered in the national capital as of 5 PM, according to the Election Commission. New Delhi, where AAP candidate Arvind Kejriwal is contesting, registered a voter turnout of 54.27 per cent.
Meanwhile, voting in the Delhi Assembly elections concluded on Wednesday at 6 pm in all 11 districts of the National Capital Territory.
As per the Elections Commission of India (ECI), voters who were in the queue by the closing time were still allowed to cast their votes.
The results of this three-way battle between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Congress are set to be announced on February 8, when the vote counting will take place. (ANI)
